Care That Fits a Village Pace

Waunakee has grown quickly, but it has held onto the feel of a village where people know their neighbors and stay put for decades. That is exactly the kind of place where aging in your own home makes sense — and where a little dependable help each week is often all it takes to keep it possible. Caring Companion is based about 13 miles east in Sun Prairie, roughly a 22-minute run down WI-19, close enough that a standing Tuesday morning visit stays a standing Tuesday morning visit.

Much of village life for older residents still circles the Waunakee Village Center, which houses the Village's Senior Services department, and the Waunakee Senior Center with its meals, cards and fitness offerings. Those programs are genuinely good, and we are not trying to replace them. What we do is fill the hours in between: the ride to the class, the groceries picked up on the way home, the kitchen cleaned before family stops by, the afternoon that would otherwise have been spent alone.

Everything we do is non-medical. We do not administer medication, and we do not provide personal care such as bathing or toileting. Instead, Terri and her team handle the practical and social side of daily life — cooking, laundry, errands, conversation, outings, so the person knocking on a Waunakee door in November is the same one who knocked in March.  We pride ourselves on having individual and dedicated caregivers for each of our clients in the communities we serve.

For adult children who live in Middleton, Madison or out of state, that consistency is often the real product. One caregiver means one set of observations, one phone number, and no re-explaining a routine to a stranger every few weeks.
