Small-Town Care, Eight Miles Away

Cottage Grove is the shortest trip we make — about 8 miles down CTH N, roughly 13 minutes door to door. It is also the most rural of the places we serve. Between the village core and the farmland that surrounds it, a lot of older residents here have spent their whole lives on the same handful of roads, and moving into town or into a facility is nowhere near the top of their list.

What tends to get hard is not the house itself but the distance around it. Groceries are a drive. So is the pharmacy, so is the doctor, so is anything social. When driving becomes uncomfortable — at night, in winter, or at all — a home that felt independent can start to feel like an island. Our visits are the antidote to that: a ride, a cooked meal, a clean kitchen, and a couple of hours of real conversation.

Village life gives us plenty to work with. The Glacial Drumlin State Trail runs right through Cottage Grove and is flat and forgiving enough for a short walk with a walking stick or a walker. The Cottage Grove Public Library is a reliable half-hour stop for large-print books, holds and a familiar face at the desk. Small outings like those do more for mood and mobility than most people expect.

As with every community we serve, the care is non-medical — no nursing, no medication administration, no bathing or toileting assistance. And it is provided by Terri or one of her dedicated colleagues, so a Cottage Grove client is not introducing themselves to a new caregiver every few weeks.
